The Lombard temple

Just minutes from our Agriturismo al Bosco Romagno, nestled in the green heart of Friuli, lies one of the region’s most fascinating and mysterious sites: the Lombard Temple. This small sacred building, hidden within the walls of the Monastery of Santa Maria in Valle in Cividale del Friuli, is considered one of the finest examples of early medieval architecture in Europe.
Its construction dates back to the 8th century, when Cividale was the capital of the Lombard Duchy of Friuli. The Temple was likely built as a private chapel for the local nobility, and even today it retains its intimate and solemn atmosphere. The interior decorations, sculpted with extraordinary finesse, testify to the encounter of different cultures: classical motifs, Byzantine influences, and Germanic traits blend into a unique artistic language that speaks to the complexity of a transitional era.
Among the most evocative elements are the six female figures in high relief, which decorate the apse wall with elegance and mystery. Their identity is unknown, but it is thought they represent saints, noblewomen, or personifications of virtue. Every detail, from the columns to the vaults, is designed to evoke spirituality and power, in a perfect balance between art and faith.
Visiting the Lombard Temple means immersing yourself in an authentic fragment of history, in a place that has survived the centuries while preserving its beauty intact. It is an ideal stop for those who love art, culture, and discovery, and is easily reached from our farmhouse, either by car or on a pleasant walk.
We recommend our guests dedicate time to this hidden gem: not only to admire its architecture, but also to soak up the atmosphere of Cividale, with its medieval streets, the Natisone River, and the discreet charm of a village with much to tell.
The Lombard Temple is more than just a visit: it is an experience that enriches your stay, leaving an indelible memory of beauty and depth.
