During your stay at Agriturismo al Bosco Romagno, immersed in nature and relaxation, you have the opportunity to explore a region whose roots date back to ancient times. Cividale del Friuli, now a historic and cultural village, was once a Roman city of great importance, founded in the 1st century BC with the name Forum Iulii.
The name Forum Iulii means “Julius’ Market,” in honor of Julius Caesar, who promoted its foundation as a strategic and commercial center. This toponym is the origin of the name of the entire region: Friuli, in fact, derives from Forum Iulii, a testament to the city’s central role in subsequent centuries.
Situated in a privileged position between the plains and the mountains, the city became a key hub for trade between northern Italy and the Danubian provinces. Under the Roman Empire, Forum Iulii developed with a typical urban structure: paved streets, public buildings, temples, baths, and private homes. It was a lively, organized city with a strong civic and cultural identity.
Even today, in the heart of the historic center, you can admire a bronze statue dedicated to Julius Caesar, located right at the intersection of two streets that date back to the Roman urban layout. Its presence is more than just symbolic: it recalls the profound connection between Cividale and its imperial origins, and celebrates Caesar’s role in the city’s founding.
Many relics from the Roman era are preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Cividale, easily accessible from our farmhouse. The museum houses highly valuable artifacts: coins, ceramics, sculptures, inscriptions, and everyday objects that recount the lives of the inhabitants of that time. Visiting it, you can reconstruct the history of a community that successfully blended local tradition and Roman civilization.
Strolling through the historic center, you can still see traces of the ancient Roman urban layout, integrated into the medieval and modern fabric of the city. It’s a journey through time that enriches your stay, offering a profound insight into Cividale’s origins and the legacy left by Rome.
From our Agriturismo in Bosco Romagno, the city center and the museum are easily reached in just a few minutes. We recommend dedicating part of your day to discovering this fascinating era, to understand how history has shaped the landscape and identity of Friuli.
Cividale is more than just a place to visit: it is a city that recounts, through its very name and its stones, the memory of a glorious past that continues to live on.
